Tamworth’s Community Radio Station

Tamworth Broadcasting Society Inc.

2 You FM TamworthTamworth’s community station history…
A public meeting was held in Tamworth in the early 1980’s where it was decided that there was a need for a high quality, stereo FM, community radio station for the emerging city. After an extensive lead time, trial broadcasts from various sites were planned and run.

Tamworth Broadcasting Society Inc, officially commenced transmission of 2YOUFM community radio on 15th July 1983. Originally broadcasting at 95.5MHz on the FM band, the station was located downstairs in the old Computer Fiscal building for a few years and then relocated to Peel St across from Markers Bakery. Broadcasts were confined to weekends. In 2000, the station moved on the dial - to broadcast from its present frequency of 88.9MHz FM.

In 2003, after 18 years in the Peel St studios, the station moved to its present location of 20 Darling St – near the railway crossing. The move was so well organised that the station lost less than one hour of air time in the process!

Our present home is the heritage listed Railway Gate Keepers Cottage owned by Tamworth Regional Council. Necessary renovations were completed in accordance with heritage and communication authority guidelines and it has proved a cosy home for 2YOUFM 88.9.

Onwards and upwards…
2008 is an exciting year for 2YOUFM, it is the station’s 25th birthday on 15 July and a cause for much celebration! In January, we co-presented Good Morning Country with the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia from the Tamworth Country Music Festival and broadcast for 24 hours during the 10 day long event. In the planning stages at present, it is envisioned that next festival will be even bigger, co hosting events with CBAA, CAAMA and other community stations - taking 2YOUFM and the Tamworth community across the Australian airwaves in January 2009.

A survey of the community as required by the Australian Communications and Media Authority was undertaken by an independent group (SHOUT marketing) in Dec 2007 and has provided valuable information for the reprogramming of the station. We are now in the position to give our community what they want from their station and will introduce any changes very gradually.

A dedicated team of volunteers from all walks of life and demographics are at the helm of 2YOUFM, and we have a keen desire to entertain and inform our community. All that we require now is YOU as YOU are the centre of 2YOUFM 88.9!

Cheesy jokes aside, become a member and vote at the AGM, receive a regular newsletter, join a committee and help run the station or sponsor us at a really competitive rate. Your feedback is always welcome as are any community service announcements.

We offer training if you would like to become a presenter, a great place to meet people and a decent cuppa - if you feel like dropping in. Tune in to 2YOUFM 88.9 in the car, at work and at home and enjoy an eclectic range of great music from people who are passionate about entertaining and informing their local community.
